Reels are the most powerful way to reach people on Instagram who don’t follow you yet. While posts and stories are mostly shown to your existing followers, Reels appear in front of completely new people on Explore and in the Reels feed. So what makes a Reel reach more people?
The first 2 seconds are everything
Viewers give you only a few seconds before deciding to keep scrolling. Start the video with movement, a curiosity-sparking line or by showing the result first: “We make this dessert in 5 minutes”. Starting with a logo animation or a long intro loses viewers.
Get people to watch to the end
Instagram decides whether to show your video to more people by looking at how much of it people watch. Short, fast-paced videos usually perform better. Cut every unnecessary second; if you can tell the story in 15–30 seconds, don’t stretch it.
Make shareable content
A video being sent to a friend or saved is a much stronger signal than a like. People share content that’s useful, entertaining or makes them say “you need to see this”. That’s why short tips, behind-the-scenes moments and before-and-after comparisons work well.
Use sound and text together
Trending sounds can help reach, but many people watch with the sound off. So deliver the main message as on-screen text too, and add subtitles if there’s speech.
Shoot vertical and in good quality
Videos should be shot in 9:16 vertical format, in good light and with clear sound. Expensive gear isn’t required; a phone, daylight and a steady hand are often enough. Videos carrying other platforms’ watermarks are recommended less.
Post regularly
Posting a few Reels a week usually works better than posting one perfect video a month. Preparing a content plan and batch-shooting makes it easier to keep that rhythm.
Measure and repeat
Which videos were watched longer, and which were shared more? Repeat the formats that work with different topics. To see your account’s overall performance, you can use our Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator.
